In 2010 and 2020 two different Monash University surveys both ranked John Curtin the most outstanding Australian Prime Minister ever.
During World War Two, Curtin singlehandedly recast the direction of Australia’s foreign policy with four words: “Australia looks to America.” IMHO that was the single most important foundational shift moment in modern Australian history.
Also during World War Two, American General Douglas MacArthur told Curtin: “Mr. Prime Minister, you and I will see this thing through together. You take care of the rear and I will take care of the front.”
Their collaboration saved the Commonwealth of Australia from the biggest ever external threat to the nation’s sovereignty.
But now Anthony Albanese’s speech about John Curtin on July 5th is giving the impression 0f backing away from Australia’s partnership with America.
International Affairs expert Greg Sheridan writes, “Who on earth is Albanese messaging in this speech? Because it implies greater Australian strategic distance from the US, it will be welcomed in Beijing.”
Prime Minister Albanese has met Chinese Premier XI Jinping four times but is yet to meet reelected American President Donald Trump.
Will Australia become more closely aligned to totalitarian China under Anthony Albanese’s leadership or fully maintain its long held place in the Western Alliance ?
